This bibliography was prepared in the course of the compiler's work in the field of human rights at WHO during 1997 and thereafter while serving as a Special Advisor in the WHO-based Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences. It does not purport to be comprehensive or necessarily up to date. Every effort has been made, however, to eliminate any bias toward English-language publications by including books, reports, and other publications (including special issues of certain journals) in all languages.
The starting date, 1984, was selected arbitrarily, although it is fully realized that key contributions to the literature on the health/human rights interface were published prior to that date.

The purpose of these Sessions was to start "a dialogue between the medical profession and... the legal profession, with the aim of encouraging medical schools to create courses on medical ethics and human rights", and to focus on the interface between medical ethics and human rights. Both the First and the Second Sessions combined medical and legal approaches in dealing with each topic; hence, two papers were presented on each issue, one dealing with medical aspects and the other with legal and human rights aspects.

The publication is divided into four Parts. The First Part is entitled "Facts in research and in law". The Second Part deals with the legitimacy of human experimentation. This book has three main themes. In the four-year period between 1992 and 1996, international conferences held under the auspices of the United Nations both acknowledged and pledged to advance reproductive rights to an unprecedented degree. Reproductive rights are at last recognized as critical to advancing women's human rights, to improving reproductive health, and to implementing population policies.
Endorsing reproductive rights is a first step towards addressing critical economic and social problems. Millions of people around the world have little or no access to reproductive health care services. Every year, over a half-million women die from complications related to pregnancy, including unsafe abortion. The prevalence of HIV/AIDS continues to increase. Millions of girls and women are subjected to female genital mutilation. Although governments around the world have pledged to eradicate such problems, the move from the rhetoric of reproductive rights to the reality of such improvements is critical.
This report sets forward these promises so that governments can be held accountable for their promises. In recognition of the critical role of NGOs in the process of social change, the report also examines implementation strategies that could be pursued by NGOs interested in reproductive rights.
